Types of glass shower doors

When designing your new shower, it’s important to understand what your choices are. Glass shower doors come in a variety of options, and at Glass Shower Doors PRO we offer them all.

Glass shower doors come in three main types: frameless, semi-frameless, and framed. You will also want to consider how your shower door will open, whether that be by a sliding door enclosure or a swinging door enclosure.

Frameless doors

If you want to make a small bathroom feel larger, or want a sleek, modern look, then frameless doors are a great option. There will be no metal frame around your door, but it may have some clips or headers to hold the enclosure in place.

Semi-frameless doors

Semi-frameless glass shower doors have a minimal metal frame on the interior of your shower door or across the top of your shower enclosure. The semi-frameless look provides a clean and modern esthetic for those who prefer the look of a frame.

Framed doors

Framed shower doors have a metal frame around the entire shower enclosure. Because the metal helps with the stability of your shower, framed shower doors are typically constructed with thinner glass than other shower options.

Sliding door enclosures

Sliding glass shower doors are installed with a track along the top and bottom. This track allows your shower door to slide sideways on a series of rollers or wheels. Sliding enclosures work with framed, semi-frameless, and frameless shower doors.

Swinging door enclosures

Swinging door enclosures open by swinging on a fixed point, and are designed to open both outward and inward. They can swing from traditional hinges, or from pivots that support the weight of your glass shower door from the top and bottom.

Things to consider when choosing your glass shower doors

When deciding on your glass shower doors, it’s important to ask yourself three things:

1. What are my bathroom walls made of?

While the thin glass of framed showers should work in any space, thicker glass doors used in frameless designs require specific wall materials to support their weight.

2. Where are the wall studs?

If you select a heavy glass door, you’ll need double studs for the hinge and the threshold. It’s important to know where your wall studs are to understand if certain designs are feasible.

3. What will the shape of my shower be?

The shape of your shower can completely change the feel of your bathroom. Are you looking for an inline (rectangular), return (square), or corner shower?

Glass shower door installation

Glass shower doors should be installed by an experienced installer. Installation is a complicated process that needs to be done correctly to ensure the structural integrity of your shower enclosure, and to make sure you don’t end up with leaks!
